Why we built it

Spreadsheets work. Nothing connects them.

The three of us roast. Jenaro Lopez at Seam Coffee in Johannesburg. Ryan Prellwitz and Micah Schoff at Companön in Ripon, Wisconsin, a small roastery in the barrel room of a winery.

Like most roasteries our size, we ran profiling software at the machine and a spreadsheet for everything else: one for green, another for production, and an accounting package that knew nothing about coffee. That arrangement works. Plenty of good roasteries run on it for years. It is just not built for the job, and nothing in it knows about anything else.

Software that does the whole job properly is out there, and we priced it. It is built for roasteries several times our size and costs accordingly, so we stayed where we were. Eventually we built one for a roastery our size, and published what it costs.

Companön runs on RoastConsole. Every green lot, production order, wholesale account and invoice in that business goes through the software described on this site. When something in it is wrong, we find out on a Tuesday morning with coffee in the drum, not in a support ticket.
